Chapter 16

AS CAITLIN’S EYES adjusted to the dim light in the room and the fact that she was nestled snugly against Jake’s long, hard body, she felt a stirring deep inside her. It was strange, but for some reason she wanted to reach out and caress his sleeping face.

He looked vulnerable. The strong masculine jaw was still firm and hard, and his cheekbones still slashed down in a rugged cut of bone and brown skin, but the effect was softened by sleep. Long, straight black lashes lay on his cheeks like smudges of soot. The straight brows weren’t lifted in mocking arrogance, but relaxed, and even the hard lines of his mouth looked touchable.

Flushing, she thought of his mouth on her, how his lips had circled her breasts in stinging kisses that made her writhe inside. He knew how to make her melt just with a brush of his mouth over hers, or a touch. Even a look. It shouldn’t be so easy for him.

Lying there, her body still tingled from the stroke of his hands on her, the rasp of his beard stubble across her tender flesh. She’d never thought of herself as especially female before, probably because there had been no time for self-indulgence, but now she felt every inch of her body. She was truly aware of it for the first time.

Her gaze drifted down, to where her slender thighs lay tangled with Jake’s muscular legs. He was hard and brown, a vivid contrast against her paler skin and softness. Tiny dark hairs covered his legs in a fine down, clustered in a thick patch at his groin, then ribboned up in a narrow vee to widen on his broad chest. He looked like what he was, a healthy male animal.

Fascinated with the contrast of her ivory-tinged skin next to his, to the blurred edges of her soft curves next to granite-hard muscle, she couldn’t resist running a hand down over his lean hip to his thigh. She could see faint marks from old scars on him, some faded to old white and almost invisible in the sculptured bands of his body, some still pink and new-looking. It made her wonder what kind of life he led and why.

If he had been born into wealth, why wander the West making a name and enemies with his gun? Why would any man do that if he wasn’t forced into it?

Her fingertips moved back up in a light caress. Female curiosity made her pause, curl her hand lightly around him as he lay limp in slumber. It was smooth, satiny in her palm and warm, and as she held him, she felt him stir. It was the slightest of movements at first, a faint trembling like a heartbeat, then growing stronger. Caitlin held her breath. It was like magic, that stirring, that change from soft and satiny to hardening steel in her palm.

Breathing deeply and feeling a strange warmth suffuse her face, Caitlin lifted her gaze from Jake’s male rigidity to his face.
